Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion

The sun’s energy heats up the ocean water at different temperatures; at the surface, water is warm while deeper seawater stays cold. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) technologie harnesses the solar energy absorbed by the oceans to generate electric power.

What is Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion?

The sun’s energy heats up the ocean water at different temperatures; at the surface, water is warm while deeper seawater stays cold. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) technologie harnesses the solar energy absorbed by the oceans to generate electric power. The warmer seawater produces a vapour, that acts as a working fluid to drive turbines. The colder water is used to condense the vapour, and ensure the vapour pressure difference drives the turbine. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion technology is an environmentally friendly alternative to other energy sources such as fossil energy. Energy generated by the use of OTEC is renewable, green and clean.

Why choose OTEC?

When compared to other energy sources, Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion has a number of benefits:

  • Applicable for small temperature differences
  • Has a high capacity factor
  • Not harmful to the environment
  • Provides electricity on a continuous, non-intermittent basis
  • Renewable
